What Is Success?

Ever have one of those days, weeks or months even where you just don’t feel like a person, at least a worthwhile person?  Those days where you feel existentially unaccomplished and like you’re not succeeding at this whole life thing?  Well, for those times, this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson might help:

“What is success?

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is to have succeeded.”

So the next time you have a day where you feel like all those mental health awareness commercials are singling you out, think of this quote.  Don’t be too hard on yourself.  This life thing is hard enough as it is.
