Politically Speaking

So today a friend of mine asked me if I watched Biden’s State of the Union Address last night.

HAHAHAHA!!!

Yeah I don’t care.  I checked the news today for the highlights, more than I normally would do.  Thank you my friend for at least spurring me to do that.

I’m curious though, who are the people who actually watch things like the State of the Union address?  Even my politically savvy friend and sister didn’t watch it.  Well, my sister said she tried to watch it but gave up.

I’d rather stare at a wall.

I probably should care about politics more, they affect all of us in one way or another.  I just don’t.

Then I went to the grocery store today.

What in the goddamn fuck is up with the price of groceries these days?  Not even two years ago a box of crackers cost $2.59.  Now they’re $4.29!   And I’m not even talking about the organic, GMO-free, antibiotic-free, rainforest-friendly, free-range, already overpriced crackers from Whole Paycheck.  I’m talking about some regular ass crackers.  WTF is up with that?

That’s politics for you.

So yeah, I guess I do care, especially when my generic, everyday Triscuits now seem like a lavish splurge.

But what to do?  Vote for someone new?  There isn’t anyone new.  It’s gonna be Trump and Biden again in the presidential election.  As for other political races going on this year, fuck if I know who any of the candidates are besides maybe the very basics.

Is it my fault that I don’t research the other candidates enough?  Maybe.  But let’s be honest, in almost every race the winner is either a Republican or Democrat.  Of the 100 members of our Senate only three are Independent.  Three.

And what about the other parties like the Green Party or Libertarian Party?  They’re like the last kids picked in a kickball game.  Hell they aren’t even chosen at all.  Sad benchwarmers.

So does it even matter if I educate myself on the views of all the candidates from different parties?  Philosophically I align more with the Green Party.  Sadly then, should I even vote at all?

Does any of it matter?

Which candidate is gonna make the price of my crackers go down?  That’s what I care about (along with things like the climate and abortion rights, just sayin).

Of course the solution is always more complicated than it seems, hence why I’m not a politician.

So to my friend who sarcastically asked if I was going to write “10 Takeaways from the State of Union Address” today, I give you just this one:

Politics is fucked, and so are we.

Have a nice day my friend!
